Wakiti Gem Grevillea (Standard) - Grevillea ‘Wakiti Gem’
Grevillea ‘Wakiti Gem’ is a low spreading garden selection presented here in grafted standard form, where the trailing growth is carried on a clear stem and falls outwards into a rounded weeping head. Flowers are in the pink to red range typical of the group and appear over a long season, drawing honeyeaters and small nectar feeding birds. As a standard it does the work of a small feature tree in a garden with a fraction of the water demand and none of the root problems.
Why Wakiti Gem Grevillea
Trained Weeping Head: A spreading cultivar lifted onto a stem gives shape and height in a bed without adding bulk.
Extended Flowering: Like most garden grevilleas it flowers across a long season rather than in a single short burst.
Bird Habitat: Nectar rich flowers support honeyeaters through the leaner cool months.
Grafted Resilience: The understock broadens its soil tolerance well beyond what the cultivar manages on its own roots.
Minimal Root Impact: A small, non aggressive root system makes it safe near paving, services and small courtyard structures.
Ideal Applications
Small Garden Feature: Provides the presence of a tree in a space that cannot accommodate one.
Repeated Bed Structure: A line of matched standards gives a native bed a formal backbone.
Dry Garden Specimen: Sits naturally among grasses, succulents and gravel mulch.
Pot Culture: Workable in a large free draining container in full sun.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m for a repeated run
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil, neutral to acidic. Plant proud of grade in clay and never create a watering basin around the trunk
Establishment Care: Give it a weekly soaking for the first three months and then step back, because grevilleas of this type establish best on lean water and fail readily in constantly damp soil. Keep phosphorus away from the root zone, use only a low phosphorus native fertiliser in spring, hold the stake until the trunk is rigid, and remove rootstock shoots from below the graft the moment they appear or they will take over the plant.
