Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Red Cherry Guava - Psidium cattleianum
Cherry guava is grown as much for its trunk as for its fruit: the bark sheds in patches to a smooth, polished bronze that looks best when the plant is limbed up as a small multi stemmed tree. Psidium cattleianum is dense, glossy leaved and evergreen, takes clipping readily, and carries small deep red fruit with a sweet strawberry like flavour through late summer and autumn. It is self fertile and starts bearing young.
Why Cherry Guava
Bark: Mottled bronze and fawn, smooth and cool to the touch, and a genuine feature once lower limbs are removed.
Fruit: Cherry sized, deep red and aromatic, eaten fresh off the bush or cooked down into jelly.
Density: Small leaves and tight branching make it a strong informal screen or a formally clipped hedge.
Hardiness: Tolerates coastal exposure, poor soils and light frost once it is established.
Siting Caution: Birds spread the seed and the plant naturalises in warm humid regions, so keep it in maintained gardens well away from bushland edges.
Ideal Applications
Edible hedge: Planted in a row it clips into a productive evergreen screen of 2 to 3m.
Multi stem feature: Trained on three or four stems it becomes a small courtyard tree with showcase bark.
Large container: Restrained root system and slow steady growth suit a big pot on a terrace.
Coastal garden: Leathery foliage stands up to salt laden wind better than most fruiting plants.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1-1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3-4m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn in warm districts, spring only in cooler areas
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable, preferring free draining soil with organic matter, and tolerant of sand and light clay
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first two summers and mulch to keep the shallow surface roots cool. Tip prune from the first season to build density, or progressively remove lower branches if you want the bark on display.
