Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Willow Leaf Hakea - Hakea salicifolia
Willow Leaf Hakea earns its place by being the fast, forgiving native screen that still looks tidy at ten years. Hakea salicifolia carries narrow willow-shaped leaves on a densely branched frame, flushing coppery bronze with each new growth cycle, and it takes hard clipping without thinning out at the base. Landscapers reach for it where a Photinia would struggle with dry soil or reflected heat, because it delivers a solid two metre wall in two or three seasons and asks for almost nothing afterwards.
Why Willow Leaf Hakea
Screen Density: Branches from ground level, so there is no bare-legged gap under the hedge as it ages.
Bronze Flush: New growth emerges reddish bronze, giving a clipped hedge several colour cycles through the warmer months.
Clipping Response: Reshoots freely from semi-hard wood, so it can be brought back if a hedge gets away from you.
Dry Soil Resilience: Established plants hold foliage through long dry spells that scorch exotic screening shrubs.
Winter Flower: Small creamy white clusters sit in the leaf axils through late winter and spring, feeding native bees and small honeyeaters.
Ideal Applications
Boundary Screening: Planted in a single row it forms a fast privacy hedge along fence lines and side boundaries.
Windbreak: Its flexible branching absorbs wind rather than fighting it, making it useful on exposed rural and semi-rural blocks.
Native Mixed Border: The fine willow-like leaf reads as a soft green backdrop behind grevilleas, correas and native grasses.
Habitat Planting: Dense twiggy growth gives small birds safe shelter and nesting cover close to the house.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring in temperate districts, autumn in warm zones. Avoid mid summer planting inland.
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sand, gravel or light clay. As a member of the protea family it resents phosphorus, so use only native-safe low phosphorus fertiliser and never fresh manure.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first summer, then taper to occasional deep soaks only. Mulch 75mm thick but pull it back a hand's width from the stem, and tip prune lightly from the first season to build density rather than waiting for height.
