Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Jackfruit - Artocarpus heterophyllus
Jackfruit produces the largest fruit borne by any tree, and it produces it in the most unusual way, directly from the trunk and heaviest limbs rather than from the outer branches. Artocarpus heterophyllus is a dense, dark leaved evergreen with a heavy rounded canopy, and it needs genuine tropical or warm frost free subtropical conditions to crop. Growers in Darwin, north Queensland and warm pockets of south east Queensland treat it as both a serious fruit tree and a substantial shade tree.
Why Jackfruit
Cauliflorous fruiting: Fruit forms on the trunk and main limbs, which is how the tree carries loads of up to thirty kilograms.
Dual purpose crop: Immature fruit is used as a vegetable and mature fruit as a sweet tropical fruit, extending the useful season.
Heavy shade: The dense canopy of thick glossy leaves gives deep, cooling shade in a hot climate.
Wet season tolerance: It thrives on high rainfall and humidity that defeat many temperate fruit trees.
Long lived: A well sited tree crops for decades, becoming a permanent structural element of a garden.
Ideal Applications
Home orchard anchor: One tree supplies a household and doubles as the shade canopy for the orchard.
Tropical shade tree: Sited away from paths and parking, it cools a large yard through the build-up season.
Food forest upper storey: It works as a long term canopy species above shade tolerant tropical crops.
Rural windbreak: Its dense structure filters wind on tropical properties where space is not limited.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5 to 6m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m
Best Planting Season: Early wet season, or spring in frost free subtropical areas
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile, free draining sandy loam. It is intolerant of waterlogging and root rot follows quickly on heavy soil, so plant on a raised bed if drainage is imperfect.
Establishment Care: Water two to three times weekly for the first two dry seasons, then keep moisture consistent during flowering and fruit fill. Mulch heavily but away from the trunk, shelter young trees from wind and any cold snap, and prune to keep the tree low enough that heavy fruit can be reached and harvested safely.
