Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Worplesdon Sweet Gum - Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’
Autumn colour on the ordinary sweet gum is a lottery in mild Australian cities. ‘Worplesdon’ was selected to remove the guesswork: a form of Liquidambar styraciflua with narrower, more deeply cut leaf lobes that turn dependably through amber and orange to deep purple red, and that colours acceptably in warmer districts where seedling trees often stay green until they simply drop. The crown is also tidier, an upright oval rather than the broad irregular head of the species.
Why Worplesdon
Reliable Colour: Selected specifically for consistent autumn display rather than the variability of seedling grown trees.
Leaf Shape: Deeply divided narrow lobes give the canopy a finer, more elegant texture than the standard star leaf.
Upright Crown: A neater oval form that fits streets and driveways better than the wide spreading species.
Long Season: Colour develops progressively over several weeks rather than turning and dropping at once.
Urban Durability: Handles compacted soil, heat and pollution, which is why liquidambars became a standard Australian street tree.
Ideal Applications
Avenue Planting: Repeated along a driveway or street for a uniform autumn display.
Large Lawn Specimen: A single tree given room to develop its full oval crown.
Summer Shade: Placed to the north or west of a house for dense summer shade and full winter sun.
Parkland And Estate: Grouped in threes and fives on acreage where the autumn effect can be seen at distance.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m for a closed row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m for full crown development
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep moist soil, slightly acid to neutral. Tolerates clay and periodic wet, but colours poorly and yellows on strongly alkaline ground
Establishment Care: Water deeply and thoroughly through the first three summers, since liquidambars scorch at the leaf margins when dry and lose their autumn display for that year. Mulch a wide circle to 75mm, and site the tree at least 5 to 6m from paving, drains and slabs because the surface roots are strong enough to lift them.
Plant Details
Height: To 15m or more in good soil, though smaller and slower than a seedling liquidambar
Width: 5 to 7m
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast

Native to: Eastern United States and Mexico, as the origin of the species
