Overview & Specifications

Long-Fruited Marlock - Eucalyptus macrandra

Eucalyptus macrandra is a compact Western Australian native that delivers outsized visual impact, vivid red blooms against broad, silver-grey foliage on a sculptural, multi-stemmed form. Exceptionally drought tolerant and architecturally distinctive, it performs where lesser species struggle.

Why Long-Fruited Marlock

Vivid floral display: Large red flowers create striking contrast against the silver foliage, commanding attention through the flowering season.
Year-round foliage interest: Broad, blue-grey leaves provide strong structural colour independent of flowering cycles.
Refined scale: Naturally compact at 3 to 6 metres, suited to projects where full-sized eucalypts are not appropriate.
Exceptional drought tolerance: Deep-rooted resilience makes it reliable across dry, free-draining, and exposed sites with minimal intervention.
Fauna value: Red flower clusters draw honeyeaters and native pollinators, supporting biodiversity in designed landscapes.

Ideal Applications

Specimen planting: Deployed as a standalone focal point in native or contemporary landscapes where architectural form is required.
Coastal and exposed properties: Performs reliably in harsh, free-draining conditions where establishment of other species is difficult.
Constrained urban sites: Scale and form suit courtyard settings, tight streetscapes, and compact residential projects.
Mass planting for colour impact: Multiple specimens planted in succession deliver a sustained, high-impact floral display across a broader landscape.

Specimen & Installation

Spacing (screening/hedge): 3–4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6–8m
Planting Season: Autumn to spring, avoiding peak summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Well-drained to moderately fertile soils; tolerates sandy, loamy or clay soils; drought tolerant once established
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice per week for the first 1–2 summers to encourage deep root development, then reduce to occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. Avoid overwatering as this species is adapted to low-rainfall conditions.
