Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Galaxy Magnolia - Magnolia ‘Galaxy’
The great weakness of deciduous magnolias in Australia is a late frost catching an early bloom, and ‘Galaxy’ was bred to sidestep exactly that by flowering noticeably later than the common Magnolia hybrids. It produces large reddish purple tulip-shaped flowers on a single-trunked, upright, pyramidal tree that keeps a tidy shape without staking or heavy formative work. In a cold garden where a soulangeana loses its buds most years, this is the more dependable option.
Why Galaxy Magnolia
Late Flowering: Blooms open after the worst of the frost window, giving a far better chance of an unblemished display.
Single Central Trunk: Grows as a proper tree rather than a multi-stemmed shrub, which suits lawns and street settings.
Large Flowers: Individual blooms are substantial, held upright and clearly visible from a distance.
Pyramidal Habit: A naturally symmetrical crown develops without corrective pruning.
Cold Tolerance: Fully hardy across cool temperate Australia including tablelands and highland districts.
Ideal Applications
Lawn Specimen: A single tree in open lawn shows both the flowering and the branch architecture to advantage.
Street and Verge Planting: The single trunk and upright crown make it suitable where clearance below is needed.
Frost-Prone Gardens: The best magnolia choice for hollows and cold-air pockets where early bloomers are unreliable.
Formal Avenue: Matched trees repeat cleanly along a driveway because the habit is so consistent.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, humus-rich, free-draining and slightly acidic; unsuited to limestone soils or heavy compacted clay
Establishment Care: Give a slow deep soak twice a week through the first two summers, because magnolia roots are shallow and suffer quickly in dry heat. Maintain 100mm of organic mulch over a wide area of the root zone, keep turf well back from the trunk, and shelter the tree from strong hot wind that shreds the large leaves.
