Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Mercury Magnolia - Magnolia ‘Mercury’
Among the deciduous magnolias, ‘Mercury’ sits at the tall and vigorous end. It makes an upright tree hung with big tulip shaped flowers, rich purple pink outside and paler within, opening from late winter into early spring, and because it flowers a little later than the earliest hybrids it more often escapes a damaging frost. It is one of the Magnolia hybrids raised by the Jury family in New Zealand, a line responsible for most of the large flowered magnolias grown in Australia today.
Why Mercury
Flower Scale: Substantial goblet flowers, generously produced along the bare branches.
Later Timing: Blooms after the earliest magnolias, which reduces the risk of a late frost taking the display.
Vertical Growth: A strongly upright habit that suits narrower garden spaces than the spreading soulangeana types.
Two Tone Effect: Deep colour on the outer surface against a much paler interior gives the open flower real depth.
Vigour: Establishes and grows faster than most deciduous magnolias, so it reaches display size sooner.
Ideal Applications
Feature Tree: Sited alone against a plain wall or dark hedge so the flowers read clearly.
Narrow Garden Beds: The upright habit fits side gardens where a spreading magnolia would not.
Woodland Garden: Planted among camellias, rhododendrons and hellebores in cool climate gardens.
Winter Interest Plantings: Combined with early bulbs beneath for a coordinated late winter display.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m in a row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m for open grown trees
Best Planting Season: Autumn or late winter before the buds swell
Soil & Drainage: Deep, humus rich, moisture retentive and free draining, slightly acid. Not suited to shallow limey soils
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly through the first two summers and keep the root zone permanently mulched to 75mm, because magnolia roots are shallow, fleshy and intolerant of both drying out and being dug around. Feed with a slow release fertiliser after flowering and prune only to remove crossing or damaged wood, straight after the flowers finish.
