Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Lennei Magnolia - Magnolia x soulangeana ‘Lennei’
‘Lennei’ is the heavyweight of the saucer magnolias, carrying thick, fleshy, deeply coloured goblets of rose purple that are creamy white inside, on a broad spreading frame. Magnolia x soulangeana ‘Lennei’ flowers slightly later than most saucer magnolias, which is a practical advantage in frost prone districts because the blooms often escape the late frosts that ruin earlier forms. It also has a habit of throwing a lighter second flush of flowers in late summer or autumn, and its unusually large leaves give a bold canopy once the spring display finishes.
Why Lennei Magnolia
Thick Fleshy Tepals: Substantial petals in deep rose purple resist wind and rain damage far better than thin tepalled magnolias.
Later Flowering: Blooming a little after other saucer magnolias often carries it past the worst of the late frosts.
Second Autumn Flush: It frequently produces a scattered repeat flowering in late summer or early autumn.
Two Tone Flower: Rich purple outside with a clean creamy white interior gives a strong contrast as the goblet opens.
Soil Tolerance: It handles heavier soils and less than ideal conditions better than most magnolias, within reason.
Ideal Applications
Broad Lawn Specimen: Its spreading, low branching shape is best displayed with open space on all sides.
Frost Prone Garden: The later flowering makes it a sensible choice for cold hollows and tableland gardens.
Screen and Backdrop: Planted as a group its width and large leaves form a substantial deciduous mass.
Classic Garden Setting: A traditional choice for period gardens in Victoria, Tasmania and the New South Wales highlands.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m, allowing for its considerable spread
Best Planting Season: Winter, while dormant.
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moisture retentive, well drained soil with organic matter. It copes with clay loam better than most magnolias provided the site does not hold water, and prefers slightly acid to neutral conditions.
Establishment Care: Water deeply and consistently through the first three summers, avoiding wet and dry cycles. Mulch to 75mm across the root plate clear of the trunk, and prune only lightly, as soon as spring flowering is over, since magnolias respond poorly to hard cutting and heal slowly.
