Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Mango - Mangifera indica
A mango is a shade tree that happens to feed you. Mangifera indica builds a dense, dark, domed canopy that casts heavy shade year round, then flowers in cream panicles through late winter and carries fruit into the warm months. Grafted trees fruit within a few years and can be held at a workable picking height, which is why they sit in so many Queensland and northern New South Wales backyards doing two jobs at once.
Why Mango
Fruit Production: A grafted tree produces true to type fruit and comes into bearing far sooner than a seedling.
Dense Shade: The canopy is one of the heaviest of any backyard fruit tree, making genuine cool shade beneath it.
Pruning Response: It takes hard annual pruning after harvest, so mature height can be held at picking level indefinitely.
Heat Performance: Long hot summers and a dry cool winter suit it, which describes most of subtropical and tropical Australia.
Flushing Colour: New growth emerges bronze to burgundy several times a year before hardening to deep green.
Ideal Applications
Backyard shade and fruit tree: The classic single specimen in a warm climate lawn, doing double duty.
Edible landscape anchor: The largest element in a productive garden of citrus, bananas and pawpaw.
Rural windbreak with yield: Planted in rows on acreage to shelter and to crop.
Pruned orchard form: Kept low and open centred where fruit access matters more than canopy size.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m centres for a pruned row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m centres for unpruned trees
Best Planting Season: Spring to early summer once soil has warmed; the start of the wet season in the tropics
Soil & Drainage: Deep, well drained loam or sandy loam; it will not tolerate heavy wet clay, so mound plant on poor drainage
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first two summers, easing off during flowering since wet conditions then encourage anthracnose. Mulch to 100mm clear of the trunk and feed with a balanced fruit tree fertiliser after harvest, not during flowering.
