Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Tea Tree - Melaleuca alternifolia
This is the tea tree behind tea tree oil, grown on plantation scale on the northern rivers of New South Wales and equally at home in a garden. Melaleuca alternifolia makes a slender small tree with soft, fine, needle like aromatic foliage and papery white bark that peels in sheets, topped in late spring by fluffy white bottlebrush spikes. It is chosen where a light, feathery evergreen is wanted that tolerates both damp ground and dry spells, and it screens without the heaviness of a lilly pilly or photinia.
Why Tea Tree
Soft Aromatic Foliage: Fine needle like leaves release the familiar clean tea tree scent when brushed or crushed.
Papery White Bark: Layered peeling bark gives an attractive pale trunk that lifts a shaded corner of the garden.
Spring Flowering: Fluffy white bottle brush spikes cover the plant from October to December and draw bees and honeyeaters.
Damp Ground Tolerance: Naturally a species of swampy creek flats, it accepts wet soils that would rot most screening plants.
Fast Light Screen: It reaches useful screening height quickly while keeping an airy rather than solid texture.
Ideal Applications
Soft Screening Row: Planted close it forms a fine textured four to six metre screen that moves in the wind.
Damp Corner Planting: Handles the low point of a garden where drainage is slow and other plants fail.
Native Habitat Garden: Flowers feed native bees and small honeyeaters, and the fine growth shelters small birds.
Pathway and Courtyard Edge: Positioned where people brush past, the aromatic foliage becomes part of the experience.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early autumn. In frost prone districts plant in spring, as young plants are frost sensitive.
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, from sandy loams to heavy clays and seasonally wet ground. It prefers acid to neutral soil and reasonable moisture, and does not need sharp drainage.
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first summer, particularly in a screening row where plants compete for the same soil volume. Mulch the row to 75mm, and tip prune lightly each year after flowering to keep growth dense from the base rather than letting it thin into open stems.
