Fine Leaf Weeping Paperbark - Melaleuca leucadendra ‘Fine Leaf’
The weeping paperbark is already one of the most graceful Australian trees, and this selection refines it further with narrower, finer foliage that hangs in long curtains from arching branches. Melaleuca leucadendra ‘Fine Leaf’ builds the same thick, layered, cream to white papery bark that peels in soft sheets, and it carries the species tolerance for ground that floods in the wet and bakes in the dry. In a warm-climate garden it delivers movement, texture and pale trunk colour all at once.
Why Fine Leaf Weeping Paperbark
Weeping Curtain: Long pendulous branchlets of narrow leaves move constantly in light wind, which very few native trees do so well.
Papery White Bark: Thick, soft, layered bark peels in cream and buff sheets and lights up when uplit at night.
Flood and Drought Range: Naturally grows on seasonally inundated flats yet copes with long dry periods once rooted.
Refined Leaf: Finer foliage than the standard species gives a lighter, softer canopy that filters rather than blocks light.
Nectar Flowers: Creamy bottlebrush spikes bring honeyeaters, bats and native bees into the garden.
Ideal Applications
Poolside and Courtyard Feature: The weeping form and pale trunk suit warm-climate resort-style planting.
Wet Area Planting: Suits dam edges, drainage swales and low ground that holds water after storms.
Boulevard and Car Park: Widely used in Queensland and northern New South Wales streetscapes for its shade and tolerance.
Multi-Stem Grove: Grouped closely, the pale trunks create a striking stand in a subtropical garden.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 6m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m
Best Planting Season: Spring through to the start of the wet season in the tropics and subtropics; spring only in cooler districts
Soil & Drainage: Extremely adaptable across sand, loam and clay, accepting periodic flooding and moderately saline soils
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first summer, since young plants are far thirstier and far more frost sensitive than mature ones. Mulch broadly, protect from frost for the first two winters in marginal districts, and prune only to lift the canopy, as the weeping form is spoiled by hard shaping.
