Swamp Paperbark - Melaleuca ericifolia
Melaleuca ericifolia is the paperbark of coastal swamps and estuarine flats across Victoria, Tasmania, southern New South Wales and South Australia, and it is built for ground other plants refuse: waterlogged, brackish and wind-exposed. It grows as a dense, multi-stemmed, suckering small tree with fine heath-like leaves and soft cream bottlebrush flowers in late spring, over creamy papery bark. As a screen or windbreak in difficult wet or coastal soil, very little in the Australian palette does the job better.
Why Swamp Paperbark
Waterlogging Tolerance: Grows in soils that stay wet for extended periods, including seasonally flooded ground.
Salt Resistance: Handles brackish soils and coastal salt-laden wind on exposed foreshore sites.
Very Dense Habit: Fine foliage packed on multiple stems makes an effective visual and wind barrier from ground level up.
Papery Bark: Soft layered cream bark on the older stems gives texture and habitat for small fauna.
Frost Hardy: Comfortable with the frosts of southern Victoria and Tasmania, unlike many tropical melaleucas.
Ideal Applications
Coastal Windbreak: Planted in staggered rows it filters salt wind on exposed southern coastal properties.
Wet Site Revegetation: A core species for restoring degraded swamp scrub and estuarine margins within its range.
Dense Privacy Screen: Close planting produces a thick evergreen barrier that needs very little maintenance.
Drainage Line Planting: Suits swales, dam edges and low wet corners where the ground rarely dries out.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m, allowing room for suckering
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring
Soil & Drainage: Accepts heavy clay, sand and peaty soils, wet or dry, including mildly saline ground; drainage is not a limiting factor
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer to settle the roots, after which established plants need no supplementary irrigation on most sites. Mulch to 75mm and be aware that the species suckers from the roots to form thickets, so plan the bed edge or install a root barrier if a defined boundary is required.
