Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Corduroy Tamarind - Mischarytera lautereriana
Corduroy tamarind takes its name from the finely ridged bark that runs the length of the trunk. Mischarytera lautereriana is a rainforest tree of the east coast, from northern New South Wales into tropical Queensland, forming a dense, glossy, pinnate leaved canopy with coppery new growth that flushes several times a year. It makes a well behaved shade and street tree in subtropical gardens, with a compact root system and no aggressive surface rooting.
Why Corduroy Tamarind
Ribbed Bark: The fluted, corduroy textured trunk is a feature at close range.
Coppery Flush: New growth emerges bronze to red several times through the warm season.
Dense Canopy: Glossy compound leaves build a solid, evenly shaped head that gives real shade.
Root Behaviour: Roots stay contained, so it can be used closer to paving than most rainforest trees.
Wildlife Fruit: Small red fruit feeds native pigeons and other rainforest birds.
Ideal Applications
Subtropical Street Tree: A tidy, self shaping canopy for verges in warm coastal towns.
Suburban Shade Tree: Casts dense summer shade over a lawn or outdoor living area.
Rainforest Restoration: Functions as a mid to upper canopy species in revegetation.
Native Screening: Planted in a row it forms a tall evergreen boundary planting.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn in warm districts
Soil & Drainage: Moisture retentive, well drained soil with plenty of organic matter, mulched heavily
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first two summers and keep the root zone mulched and free of competing grass. Shelter young trees from frost and drying wind until the canopy closes over.
