Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Orange Jessamine (Hedge) - Murraya paniculata
Orange jessamine is the default fast evergreen hedge across warm Australia for good reason. Murraya paniculata holds glossy dark green pinnate foliage right down to ground level, shears cleanly, and refurnishes quickly after cutting, so a hedge line closes over in a couple of seasons rather than a decade. Several times a year, usually a few days after rain, the whole hedge flushes with small white flowers whose scent is close to orange blossom, followed by small orange red berries.
Why Orange Jessamine
Speed to screen: Fast growth means a planted line closes into a solid hedge within about two seasons.
Furnished to the ground: It holds foliage low on the plant, so hedges do not go leggy and bare at the base.
Rain triggered flowering: Flushes of white flowers follow rainfall events through spring, summer and autumn.
Strong fragrance: The scent is citrus like and carries well, which makes it worth planting near outdoor living areas.
Heat and humidity tolerance: It performs in Brisbane, Sydney, Perth and Darwin conditions that stress cool climate hedging plants.
Ideal Applications
Boundary hedge: The standard use, clipped two or three times a year to a clean face at 1.5 to 2.5m.
Pool screen: Dense evergreen growth and fragrance suit a pool surround, with minimal leaf drop into the water.
Narrow side passage: It tolerates being kept tight, so it fits the restricted beds between a house and a fence.
Informal shrub mass: Left unclipped it develops into a rounded flowering shrub in a mixed subtropical border.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.8m centres for a tight formal hedge, 1m for a looser screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m as an individual shrub in a mixed planting
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn, into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, enriched soil. It responds strongly to compost and regular feeding, and it is frost tender below about minus 2 degrees
Establishment Care: Water two to three times a week through the first summer, because uneven moisture causes yellowing and leaf drop along a young hedge line. Mulch the full hedge run to 75mm, feed in spring and again in mid summer with a complete fertiliser, and begin light tip pruning as soon as the plants take hold so density builds from the bottom up.
