Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Packham’s Triumph Pear - Pyrus communis ‘Packham’s Triumph’
Packham's Triumph is Australia's own pear, raised at Molong in New South Wales in the 1890s and still the benchmark green pear in this country. Pyrus communis ‘Packham's Triumph’ makes an upright, strong framed tree that carries clouds of white blossom in spring and then a heavy crop of large, slightly irregular fruit. Picked firm and ripened indoors, the flesh softens to a fine, buttery, almost creamy texture.
Why Packham’s Triumph
Fruit: Large green pears that ripen to lemon yellow, fine grained and juicy, and store for weeks in the cold.
Blossom: One of the heaviest white blossom displays of any fruit tree, worth a garden position on that alone.
Structure: Naturally upright with strong limb attachment, so it trains cleanly to a central leader or an espalier.
Cropping: Needs a compatible pollinator such as Williams Bon Chretien or Beurre Bosc flowering at the same time.
Climate: Wants a genuinely cold winter, so it performs best in cool and cool temperate districts rather than warm coastal gardens.
Ideal Applications
Home orchard: The backbone pear of a mixed fruit planting in southern Australia.
Espalier on a fence: Spur bearing wood suits horizontal training along wires in a narrow bed.
Country garden avenue: A row of pears gives blossom in spring and dappled shade in summer.
Shade near an outdoor area: Deciduous canopy shades in summer and lets winter sun through.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3-4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5-6m
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant, or autumn to early spring from a container
Soil & Drainage: Deep loam is ideal, and pears tolerate heavier, damper soils than most fruit trees provided water does not sit
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers and again while fruit is filling in late summer. Keep a mulched, grass free circle a metre wide around the trunk and prune in winter to an open, well spaced framework.
