Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Yatsabusa Japanese Black Pine - Pinus thunbergii ‘Yatsabusa’
Yatsabusa is the Japanese nursery term for a dwarf, many-budded form, and that is precisely what this Pinus thunbergii selection delivers: multiple buds at every shoot tip, short needles, and growth compressed into a tight, congested bush. It gives the unmistakable black pine character, stiff dark needles and rugged bark, at a scale that fits a small courtyard or a large pot. Where the species needs a paddock, this one needs a corner.
Why Yatsabusa Japanese Black Pine
Multi-budded shoots: Several buds form at each tip instead of one, so branching multiplies quickly and the plant fills in on its own.
Shortened needles: Needles are noticeably shorter than the species, giving finer texture at close viewing distance.
Dwarf scale: Stays a dense shrub for many years, which keeps it usable in confined spaces.
Coastal hardiness: Inherits the species tolerance of salt wind and sandy, infertile soil.
Bonsai heritage: Long grown for container and bonsai work, so it takes hard shaping without sulking.
Ideal Applications
Small courtyards: Provides evergreen structure where a full black pine would overwhelm.
Feature pots: Genuinely suited to long-term container culture in a well-drained gritty mix.
Coastal front gardens: Holds up to salt-laden wind close to the beach.
Rock and gravel compositions: Sits well among boulders where its congested form reads as naturally stunted.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m for a low informal band
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring; coastal gardens can plant through winter
Soil & Drainage: Sandy, gravelly, sharply drained soil; tolerates poor fertility, resents wet clay
Establishment Care: Soak deeply once a week for the first two summers rather than sprinkling daily. Apply a coarse mulch clear of the trunk and pinch spring candles by half if you want to hold the plant even tighter.
