Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Japanese Plum (Espalier) - Prunus salicina
Left to itself a Japanese plum throws long, arching growth in every direction and puts most of its fruit out of reach. Trained flat onto horizontal tiers, Prunus salicina becomes a disciplined, easily managed plant that fits a fence line or a narrow bed and hands you the entire crop at arm's length. Blossom arrives in late winter, and fruit follows through the first half of summer.
Why Train a Plum Flat
Access: Every branch is reachable for thinning, netting against birds and picking without a ladder.
Light Penetration: A single plane of growth exposes all wood to sun, which improves fruit colour and sugar.
Warm Climate Cropping: Japanese plums need only modest winter chill, so they suit warm temperate and coastal gardens.
Space Efficiency: A mature espalier takes up half a metre of ground depth instead of several metres.
Cropping Partner: Plant a second Japanese plum variety flowering at the same time for a reliable crop.
Ideal Applications
Boundary fence: Productive screening in a strip that would otherwise be wasted ground.
Warm wall: Radiated heat brings the crop on earlier and helps ripen fruit evenly.
Small block orchard: Several trained trees yield far more per square metre than one open tree.
Garden compartment screen: On freestanding posts and wires it divides a garden without blocking light.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3-3.5m for a continuous trained row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4m
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Well drained loam improved with compost, never a site that holds water in winter
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly through the first summer and keep moisture steady from flowering to harvest. Mulch to 75mm clear of the trunk, tie extensions down before the wood stiffens, and prune in late summer to limit disease entry.
