Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Buddhist Pine - Podocarpus macrophyllus
Despite the name, this is not a pine at all. Podocarpus macrophyllus is a slow, dense conifer from southern Japan and China with soft strap-shaped leaves that take shearing as cleanly as buxus, which is why it has become the default choice for tall formal hedges in humid coastal Australia where most conifers fail outright. Left alone it develops into a narrow upright tree. Clipped, it will hold a crisp two metre green wall for decades with very little intervention.
Why Buddhist Pine
Shear Tolerance: Reshoots reliably from cut wood, so it can be held to a flat face and sharp corners indefinitely.
Controllable Pace: Slow, even growth means a formal hedge needs trimming once or twice a year rather than monthly.
Humidity Hardiness: Unlike cypress and thuja it does not brown out in humid subtropical summers.
Soft Foliage: The broad flat leaves have no spines or prickles, making it safe alongside paths and play areas.
Deep Green Constancy: Colour holds through winter with no bronzing or seasonal dulling.
Ideal Applications
Tall Formal Hedge: The standard solution for a clipped evergreen wall from 1.5m up to 4m.
Narrow Side Screening: Its slim natural habit fits the tight gap between two houses where a lilly pilly would be too wide.
Topiary And Cloud Pruning: Fine branching and small leaves suit sculpted and cloud pruned forms.
Courtyard Pots: Tolerates long term container culture in shaded courtyards and entry alcoves.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn
Soil & Drainage: Well drained but moisture retentive, slightly acid to neutral soil. Sandy coastal ground works once organic matter is added, but it will not accept standing water.
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist through the first two summers, as the slow root system takes longer to reach out than a fast-growing screen. Begin light tip pruning in the first year to build density from the base rather than waiting for it to reach full height.
