Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Buddhist Pine (Standard) - Podocarpus macrophyllus
Despite the common name, Podocarpus macrophyllus is not a pine at all but a southern conifer with broad, soft, strap shaped leaves arranged in dense whorls. Trained as a standard, it carries a clear stem below a clipped head of deep glossy green. Its real advantage over other clipped standards in Australian gardens is shade tolerance: it holds full density in part shade where a cypress or an olive would thin out and go leggy, which makes it the reliable answer for a shaded entry or a south facing courtyard.
Why the Buddhist Pine Standard
Shade Performance: Keeps a dense clipped head in part shade, which very few formal standards manage.
Leaf Character: Broad soft leaves rather than needles, so the head has a smooth glossy surface and is pleasant to brush past.
Slow Growth: Holds its trained shape for long stretches, needing only a light tidy twice a year.
Wind and Coastal Tolerance: Copes with exposed positions and moderate salt without leaf burn.
Container Suitability: One of the best long term potted standards, since it accepts root restriction without stress.
Ideal Applications
Shaded Entry Pair: The standard choice where a doorway gets only a few hours of direct sun.
Narrow Side Courtyard: Fits a tight bed between buildings where light is limited and the ground area is small.
Terrace Planters: Reliable in large pots on a balcony, roof deck or terrace over many years.
Formal Repetition: A row of matched heads against a rendered wall gives a clean, quiet architectural line.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m for a run of heads that reads as a continuous band.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m.
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn.
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, organically improved, slightly acidic to neutral. It tolerates a range of soils but not persistent wet.
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly for the first summer, then weekly, keeping the root ball evenly moist rather than swinging between wet and dry. Keep the stem staked until the head is fully knitted, feed with a slow release fertiliser in spring and late summer, and trim the head lightly twice a year to hold the outline.
