Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Crows Nest Poplar - Populus x euramericana ‘Crows Nest’
‘Crows Nest’ is a hybrid black poplar selected for Australian conditions, grown as a fast, upright, broadly columnar tree for shelter and avenue work. Populus x euramericana is among the quickest large deciduous trees available, throwing height in a few seasons and turning clear gold before dropping its leaves. It is a rural and large property tree rather than a suburban one, and it needs to be sited well away from drains, septic systems, paving and building foundations.
Why Crows Nest Poplar
Rapid height: Very few deciduous trees put on usable shelter height as quickly on a moist site.
Upright habit: A narrow to broadly columnar crown means a shelter belt occupies little ground width.
Golden autumn: Leaves turn a clean uniform yellow gold across the whole tree in autumn.
Sound and movement: Poplar foliage rustles constantly in even light wind, which is a large part of the appeal.
Winter transparency: Bare through winter, so it shelters in summer without blocking valuable winter sun.
Ideal Applications
Farm shelter belt: A single or double row protects paddocks, orchards, vineyards and stock yards.
Long driveway avenue: Regularly spaced poplars give a strong vertical avenue on rural approaches.
Dam and creek margins: Suits damp ground where its heavy water demand becomes an advantage.
Fast boundary screen: Provides seasonal privacy on acreage far sooner than slower growing alternatives.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 5m for a shelter belt
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 10m, and at least 15m from buildings, drains and septic lines
Best Planting Season: Winter, while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep moist soil is ideal; it tolerates heavy and periodically wet ground far better than most large trees but wants reasonable fertility
Establishment Care: Water deeply through the first two summers, as poplars grow only as fast as their water supply allows. Stake tall young trees against wind for the first two years and keep the base clear of turf, mowing damage to poplar bark being a common cause of early loss.
