Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
White Oak - Quercus alba
Quercus alba is a long term tree in every sense. It grows slowly, builds a broad rounded crown over a pale grey furrowed trunk, and colours a deep wine red in autumn rather than the plain brown of many oaks. Plant it where it will never need to be moved and where there is genuine room, because a mature white oak occupies as much ground as a small house.
Why White Oak
Autumn Colour: Leaves turn burgundy to wine red and hold late in cool districts, unusual among the white oak group.
Crown Shape: Broad, spreading and horizontally branched, quite different from the narrow upright pin oak.
Bark: Light ash grey, shallowly furrowed and plated, and a real feature once the leaves are down.
Longevity: Among the longest lived oaks, so it is planted as a generational tree rather than a garden filler.
Seasonal Shade: A dense summer canopy gives way to bare branches that let winter sun through to the house.
Ideal Applications
Large lawn specimen: Given open ground it develops the wide, low branched form that shows the species at its best.
Parkland and civic planting: Long lived and structurally sound, suiting spaces designed for a century of use.
Rural driveway: Spaced widely along an entrance drive it forms an avenue on a generous scale.
Deciduous house shade: Sited to the north or west it cools a house in summer and admits sun in winter.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 8-10m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 12-15m
Best Planting Season: Winter and early spring while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moist, well drained and slightly acidic loam, poor performance on shallow, compacted or strongly alkaline soils
Establishment Care: White oak forms a deep tap root and is slow to settle, so water deeply and infrequently through the first three summers to draw roots downward. Mulch widely, keep turf off the root zone, and avoid digging or compacting soil under the canopy.
