Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Champion Quince - Cydonia oblonga ‘Champion’
‘Champion’ is a large-fruited quince producing pale golden, pear-shaped fruit with flesh that cooks down tender and rose-pink. Cydonia oblonga makes an unusually characterful small tree, developing a crooked, low-branched frame with grey-felted leaves and unusually large single flowers, which is why it has a place in ornamental gardens as well as orchards. It also handles damp, heavy ground far better than the apples and pears it is related to.
Why Champion Quince
Self Fertile: Quinces set fruit without a pollinating partner, so a single tree crops on its own.
Large Showy Blossom: The pale pink single flowers are among the biggest of any fruit tree and open after frost risk has largely passed.
Wet Soil Tolerance: Copes with heavier, moister ground than most deciduous fruit trees will accept.
Picturesque Frame: Naturally gnarled, twisting branch structure gives real winter presence.
Storage and Fragrance: Harvested fruit perfumes a room for weeks and keeps well before cooking.
Ideal Applications
Kitchen Garden Anchor: A single tree supplies more than most households can preserve in a season.
Damp Corner Planting: Useful in the low, wetter part of a block where other fruit trees fail.
Ornamental Small Tree: Grey foliage, big flowers and a twisted frame carry it in a mixed border, not just an orchard.
Heritage and Cottage Gardens: A traditional inclusion in older Australian gardens across the cooler temperate south.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m for a fruiting row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Moisture-retentive loam or clay loam; tolerates damp ground but not permanent standing water
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, as quinces drop fruit under drought stress. Mulch to 100mm across a wide grass-free ring, and prune lightly in winter to open the centre rather than heading branches back, since fruit forms on the tips of the current season's growth.
