Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Flintwood - Scolopia braunii
Flintwood gets its name from timber hard enough to blunt tools, but in the landscape Scolopia braunii is valued for something gentler: a dense, fine textured, glossy canopy that clips beautifully and flushes bright pink to red with each new growth cycle. It is an east coast rainforest tree that behaves impeccably in cultivation, holding a tight upright form and taking hard shearing without thinning out. Where a designer wants a formal native hedge or a clean pleached screen, this is one of the very few species that genuinely delivers it.
Why Flintwood
Clipping Response: It tolerates repeated shearing and responds by getting denser, which is rare among rainforest natives.
Flush Colour: New growth emerges pink to coppery red across the whole plant, giving a seasonal colour change.
Leaf Fineness: Small glossy leaves give a refined texture that suits formal and contemporary schemes.
Upright Habit: Naturally narrow and vertical, so it works in tight planting strips against a wall or fence.
Fruit for Birds: Small cream flowers give way to orange to red fruit taken by rainforest birds.
Ideal Applications
Formal native hedge: Sheared to a crisp face along a boundary or driveway.
Tall privacy screen: Left unclipped in a row it grows into a solid evergreen wall well above fence height.
Feature and shade tree: A single specimen with the crown lifted gives a neat, well proportioned small tree.
Rainforest restoration: An established component of east coast subtropical rainforest regeneration.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m centres for a clipped hedge, 2m for an informal screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 6m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring through early autumn in warm zones; spring in cooler coastal districts
Soil & Drainage: Moist, free draining soil with organic matter; adapts to improved clay but not to standing water
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly for the first three months and weekly through the first summer to build a dense root plate. Mulch to 75mm, and begin light formative trimming in the first year so the hedge face fills from the base upward.
