Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Coast Redwood - Sequoia sempervirens
This is the tallest tree species on earth, and even in Australian conditions Sequoia sempervirens builds a massive conical evergreen of soft dark needles over spongy, fibrous, cinnamon red bark. It grows fast in cool, moist, sheltered situations, holding a dead straight leader and a canopy that sweeps to the ground when given room. It belongs on acreage, in parkland and on large cool climate properties, and it should never be planted close to a house, boundary or service line.
Why Coast Redwood
Sheer scale: In good conditions it becomes the dominant tree on a property within a couple of decades.
Fibrous bark: Thick, soft, deeply furrowed red brown bark is warm to the eye and remarkably fire resistant.
Soft foliage: Flat, two ranked, deep green needles give a fine texture unusual in a conifer of this size.
Fast establishment: On a moist site with good soil it can put on close to a metre of height a year while young.
Reshoots from the base: Unlike most conifers it coppices and produces basal sprouts, so it recovers from damage.
Ideal Applications
Acreage specimen: A single tree in open paddock or parkland, sited with decades of growth in mind.
Grand avenue: Widely spaced along a long driveway on a rural property with cool moist soil.
Shelter belt on large properties: A row provides serious wind reduction on cool climate farms and vineyards.
Cool climate arboretum planting: Suits the Southern Highlands, Adelaide Hills, Dandenongs, Tasmania and the tablelands.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 6m for a shelter belt
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 12m, and at least 15m from any building, drain or boundary
Best Planting Season: Autumn through to early spring while the soil is cool and moist
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moist, slightly acidic, well drained soil; it will not thrive in hot dry inland conditions, shallow soil or alkaline ground
Establishment Care: Water generously through the first three summers, since young redwoods will not tolerate drying out and rarely recover their leader once checked. Mulch a wide ring with coarse organic material and shelter young trees from drying wind, which browns the foliage.
Plant Details

Width: 5 to 9m
Growth Rate: Fast
