Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Strobilanthes gossypinus
Grown almost entirely for foliage, this Indian shrub covers every new leaf and stem in a dense silver felt that catches low light and holds its colour all year. Strobilanthes gossypinus makes a soft upright mound rather than a rigid shrub, and it earns its place where a silver grey mass is needed in a frost free bed among greens and burgundies. Spikes of small pale violet flowers appear on mature plants, but the felted leaves are the reason to plant it.
Why Strobilanthes gossypinus
Woolly silver leaves: A thick coat of fine hairs gives a matt pewter surface unlike the glaucous blue of most silver plants.
Year round colour: Being evergreen, the silver effect does not disappear in winter the way it does with herbaceous grey foliage.
Quick fill: It bulks up fast, closing gaps in a new bed within a season or two.
Responds to pruning: Cut back hard in early spring it reshoots densely from old wood and stays compact.
Humidity tolerance: Unlike Mediterranean grey foliage plants, it holds up through humid coastal summers.
Ideal Applications
Contrast layer in a mixed border: Set against dark cordylines or burgundy foliage the silver reads strongly from a distance.
Subtropical courtyard: Adds a cool tone to the usual palette of glossy tropical greens.
Large containers: Holds a neat mounded shape in a pot with regular tip pruning.
Under high branched palms: Fills the light shade at the base of a palm grove where grasses look thin.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer once night temperatures are reliably mild
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, moderately fertile soil with organic matter; heavy wet clay in winter is the main risk
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first summer to settle it in, then reduce to weekly, avoiding overhead watering that flattens the felt on the leaves. Mulch to 75mm and pinch the growing tips two or three times in the first year to build a dense multi stemmed frame.
