Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Thaumatophyllum stenolobum
This is the narrow leaved member of the group of Brazilian aroids recently separated from Philodendron. Thaumatophyllum stenolobum holds its leaves on long upright petioles, each blade cut almost to the midrib into slender, finger-like lobes, so the plant reads as a fountain of green ribbons rather than the heavy paddle-leaf mass of its better known relatives. It is chosen where a tropical planting needs volume without visual weight.
Why Thaumatophyllum stenolobum
Leaf Dissection: Deeply cut, narrow lobes allow light and views through the plant, which is unusual in a large leaved aroid.
Self Heading Habit: It builds a single thick stem crowned by a rosette of leaves rather than climbing, so it needs no support or trellis.
Architectural Silhouette: With age the stem leans and creeps along the ground, leaving an exposed sculptural trunk marked with old leaf scars.
Shade Reliability: It holds full leaf quality in filtered light and shaded courtyards where flowering tropicals go sparse.
Container Suitability: The compact root system tolerates pot culture for many years, which matters in climates too cold for it in open ground.
Ideal Applications
Shaded Courtyards: A grouping of three under a canopy or shade sail builds a tropical understorey in a small footprint.
Interior and Atrium Planting: Large containers in bright indirect light in lobbies, stairwells and indoor-outdoor rooms.
Poolside Beds: Its leaf litter is low and the roots are non invasive, which suits planting beds against paved pool surrounds.
Resort Style Mass Planting: Drifted beneath palms in frost free Queensland and northern New South Wales gardens.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.2m for a continuous understorey
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m so the leaf rosette develops fully
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, once night temperatures are consistently mild
Soil & Drainage: Rich, open, free draining mix high in organic matter; it will rot in heavy soils that stay wet
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist but never saturated through the first year, and feed lightly with a slow release fertiliser each spring. Protect from frost and cold drying wind, and note the sap contains calcium oxalate, so wear gloves when pruning old leaves and keep offcuts away from pets.
