Overview & Specifications

Golden Elm - Ulmus glabra ‘Lutescens’
The Golden Elm is a shade tree first and a colour tree second, though the colour is what everyone remembers. Ulmus glabra ‘Lutescens’ pushes butter yellow leaves in spring, cools to soft lime through summer and returns to gold before dropping, all on a wide domed canopy that can shade an entire lawn. It is a big tree in every sense, and the reason it is planted less often in small gardens than it deserves is simply that it needs the room.
Why Golden Elm
Three seasons of colour: Gold in spring, lime in summer, gold again in autumn, without a flower involved.
Genuine shade canopy: The broad dome throws dense summer shade over a large area, then clears completely for winter sun.
Disease clear in Australia: Dutch elm disease has never established here, so Australian elms are grown without the risk that removed them from northern hemisphere streets.
Vigorous surface roots: Roots run wide and shallow, which is why it wants distance from paving, footings and drainage lines.
Foliage burns in hot dry wind: The soft leaves scorch in extreme heat, so it performs best in cooler districts and in soil that holds moisture.
Ideal Applications
Parkland lawn specimen: The single best use, standing alone in open turf where the full dome can develop.
Rural entrance avenue: Widely spaced along a long driveway it creates a canopy tunnel over decades.
Summer shade over open space: Positioned to the north or west of a house it cuts summer heat load substantially.
Heritage garden restoration: It is a period appropriate choice for older Victorian and Tasmanian gardens where it has long been planted.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging tree; allow 8 to 10m even in a grouped planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to late winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moisture retentive loam that still drains; it tolerates a wide pH range but resents shallow, hot, sandy ground
Establishment Care: Water long and deep through the first three summers so roots chase moisture downward rather than sitting at the surface. Mulch a wide ring clear of the trunk, keep turf back from the base for the first few years, and site it a minimum of 8 to 10m from buildings, paving and drains.
