Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Louis van Houtte Elm - Ulmus ‘Louis van Houtte’
This is the golden elm with a proper tree shape. Ulmus ‘Louis van Houtte’ holds soft butter-yellow foliage from bud burst right through summer, and unlike some gold-leaf trees it does not bleach to cream or scorch to brown by January in most temperate Australian gardens. The habit is a broad upright dome rather than the low spreading form of the more familiar golden elm, which makes it easier to place near paths and driveways.
Why Louis van Houtte Elm
Season-Long Gold: Foliage emerges bright yellow and stays gold through summer instead of fading to green by Christmas.
Tolerant Constitution: Elms accept compacted soil, wind, heat and a wide pH range, which is why they persist in old country towns.
Winter Structure: The fine, evenly divided branch network is attractive once the leaves fall.
Shade Value: A dense summer canopy that turns a bright, warm light beneath rather than the heavy gloom of dark-leaved trees.
Colour Without Flowers: Delivers a strong colour statement in gardens where flowering is unreliable.
Ideal Applications
Focal Lawn Tree: The gold canopy reads from a long distance and works as the single accent in a green garden.
Rural Homestead Planting: Traditional around country houses and sheds for shade and shelter.
Colour Contrast Groupings: Planted against dark conifers or a purple-leaf tree for deliberate foliage contrast.
Large Garden Shade: Suits properties where a genuinely large deciduous tree has room to develop.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 14m
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant, or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, from sandy loam to clay, acidic through to alkaline, provided water does not pond over the root zone for long periods
Establishment Care: Water deeply every week through the first two summers so the gold foliage does not crisp at the margins in heat. Mulch broadly, and remove any root suckers that appear in lawn or beds as soon as they show, since elms sucker readily from disturbed roots.
