Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Dense Fence Viburnum - Viburnum odoratissimum ‘Dense Fence’
‘Dense Fence’ was selected from Viburnum odoratissimum for one job: a narrow, upright, densely branched screen that reaches privacy height without spreading into the garden. It holds large glossy leaves right down to the base, flushes bronze with new growth, and grows fast enough to close a boundary gap within a couple of seasons. It is the plant most often specified in Australia where a fence needs to be made taller with foliage rather than timber.
Why Dense Fence Viburnum
Narrow and upright: A naturally columnar habit means a screen roughly 1.5 to 2m wide instead of the sprawl of standard sweet viburnum.
Foliage to ground level: It stays clothed at the base, so there is no bare leg to fill in later.
Fast closure: Rapid growth in warm districts means a continuous green wall within two to three seasons.
Glossy leaf: Large deep green leaves with bronze new growth give a rich, healthy looking hedge face.
Broad climate range: Performs from subtropical Queensland through Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, tolerating light to moderate frost once established.
Ideal Applications
Boundary privacy screen: The standard solution for blocking a neighbouring upper storey or overlooking window.
Narrow side passage: Fits garden beds too tight for a conventional hedging shrub.
Pool surround screen: Evergreen, dense and quick, with minimal leaf drop into the water compared to deciduous options.
Noise and wind buffer: Dense foliage mass along a road frontage softens traffic noise and filters wind.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.75 to 1m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring or autumn; avoid planting into hard frost or peak summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Most reasonable garden soils with free drainage; improve clay with gypsum and compost and mound the planting line
Establishment Care: Water deeply two or three times a week through the first summer, as a close planted hedge line has heavy combined demand. Mulch the whole run to 75mm, feed in spring and late summer, and tip prune lightly two or three times in the first two years to build density rather than waiting for height.
