Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Native Broom - Viminaria juncea
Few Australian plants solve a wet site as gracefully as Native Broom. Viminaria juncea is a leafless pea shrub built from masses of fine green rush like stems that hang in a soft weeping curtain, so it reads more like a green fountain than a conventional shrub. In late spring and summer the whole canopy is dotted with small golden yellow pea flowers, and because it fixes nitrogen it will grow on the poor, boggy ground where most feature plants rot.
Why Native Broom
Waterlogging tolerance: It occurs naturally in swamp margins and seasonally inundated flats, and accepts soil that stays wet through winter.
Weeping texture: The pendulous cylindrical stems give a fine, almost casuarina like texture that softens hard landscape edges.
Golden flowering: Small bright yellow pea flowers appear along the stems from roughly October to January.
Nitrogen fixing: As a legume it improves poor and sandy soils, which makes it valuable in early stage revegetation.
Rapid cover: It reaches useful size quickly, though it is not a long lived plant and is best used where succession is planned.
Ideal Applications
Bioswales and rain gardens: One of the better native choices for the wet base of a detention basin or drainage line.
Dam and pond surrounds: The weeping habit suits water edges and holds soil on damp banks.
Informal screening: Grouped closely it gives a see through green veil rather than a solid wall.
Nurse planting: Fast early cover and nitrogen input while slower framework trees establish around it.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m apart
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m apart
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring, avoiding the peak of summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Happy in sand, sandy loam and peaty soils, tolerates poor drainage and periodic inundation, and dislikes lime
Establishment Care: On a naturally damp site little watering is needed beyond the first few weeks, while on drier ground water weekly through the first summer. Avoid phosphorus rich fertilisers and keep mulch light, as the plant is adapted to low nutrient conditions.
