Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Geisha Japanese Wisteria - Wisteria floribunda ‘Geisha’
‘Geisha’ is a named selection of Wisteria floribunda, the long tasselled Japanese species, chosen for its soft mauve to lilac toned racemes rather than the heavy violet of the common forms. Like all floribunda selections it flowers as the new leaves emerge, so the tassels hang against fresh green rather than bare wood, and it needs the same disciplined pruning to convert its considerable vigour into flowering spurs.
Why Geisha Japanese Wisteria
Soft Colouring: The paler mauve tones read as light and airy on a pergola where a deep purple form can look heavy.
Long Tassels: Typical of the species, the racemes are pendulous and slender rather than short and plump.
Flowers with Foliage: Japanese wisteria opens alongside the emerging leaves, which suits gardens where a bare framework in bloom looks stark.
Bee Value: The flowers are heavily worked by bees, which matters in a productive garden.
Trainability: Whippy annual growth is easy to direct along wire, beams or an espalier frame while it is still soft.
Toxicity warning: The seeds and pods are toxic if eaten, so site it away from play areas.
Ideal Applications
Entry Pergola: Gives a scented, softly coloured spring welcome then dense shade through summer.
Poolside Shade Frame: Deciduous cover means winter sun on the water and shade when it is wanted.
Espaliered Wall: Trained flat on wire it delivers a two dimensional flowering facade.
Courtyard Feature Tree: Staked and headed as a standard it works as a small weeping specimen in a paved courtyard.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m along a support run
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam of moderate fertility. Heavy nitrogen and rich manures push leaf growth and delay flowering
Establishment Care: Deep watering once or twice weekly through the first two summers builds the deep root system this climber relies on later. Mulch to 75mm clear of the stem, tie the leaders onto their permanent framework, and start the summer and winter spur pruning cycle by year three so the vigour is converted into flower buds instead of runners.
