Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Agave ‘Burnt Burgundy’
This is a compact garden agave grown for leaf colour rather than size: the olive to grey-green blades are edged and toothed in deep burgundy red, and the tone intensifies in full sun and through cold weather. It stays small enough for a pot or a front-of-border position, which sets it apart from the large landscape agaves that eventually take over a bed. Like all Agave, it asks for sun, grit and neglect, and it will decline quickly in rich soil that stays damp.
Why Burnt Burgundy
Leaf Margin Colour: Dark burgundy edges and teeth outline every leaf, giving the rosette a drawn, graphic quality.
Compact Rosette: Small enough to use at the front of a bed or in a container without crowding neighbours.
Colour Response: The burgundy deepens with strong light and cool temperatures, so the plant shifts tone through the year.
Minimal Water: Thrives on rainfall in most temperate gardens once its roots are established.
Structural Contrast: The hard geometry of the rosette contrasts sharply with grasses and soft-mounding plants.
Ideal Applications
Feature Pot: A single rosette in a shallow bowl or terracotta pot on a terrace or entry.
Gravel and Rockery Beds: Set among stone and gravel mulch where drainage is sharp and the form is displayed.
Repeated Accent: Planted at intervals through a dry border to give rhythm and structure.
Low Water Front Garden: Combines with sedum, dianella and ornamental grasses in an unirrigated streetfront bed.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.5 to 0.7m for a continuous mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.2m
Best Planting Season: Spring through early autumn, into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Very free draining sandy or gravelly soil, or a cactus and succulent mix in pots; wet feet in winter is the usual cause of failure
Establishment Care: Water sparingly every ten to fourteen days for the first two months, then rely on rainfall except in extended drought. Mulch with gravel rather than bark so the crown stays dry, and site the plant away from paths and doorways, since the leaf tips are sharp.
