Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Compact Jade - Crassula ovata ‘Compacta’
A small leaved, tightly branched selection of the South African jade, this Crassula ovata form builds thick jointed stems and a miniature tree structure at a fraction of the size of the ordinary jade plant. Leaves are glossy, plump and rimmed in red when grown hard in sun. It is chosen where the sculptural bonsai look is wanted without the sprawl, and where a plant has to survive genuine neglect.
Why Compact Jade
Miniature Tree Structure: Thick trunk-like stems and a branching crown give the character of an old tree at knee height.
Reduced Leaf Size: Smaller, denser foliage than the common jade keeps the whole plant in proportion in a pot or small bed.
Sun Blush: Grown in strong light the leaf margins colour deep red, deepening further through cool dry weather.
Cool Season Flowers: Clusters of small starry white to pale pink flowers appear from late autumn into winter on established plants.
Minimal Water Demand: Once settled it survives on rainfall alone in most temperate and coastal districts.
Ideal Applications
Container Displays: A natural for shallow bowls, glazed pots and grouped potscapes on a sunny terrace.
Coastal Rockeries: Handles salt wind and sharp sandy soil where softer shrubs burn.
Low Water Courtyards: Reliable structure in gravel gardens that get watered rarely or not at all.
Bonsai Style Feature: The naturally thickened stems respond well to a raised pot and selective pruning.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.5 to 0.7m for a low informal edge
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn; avoid planting into cold wet soil in mid winter
Soil & Drainage: Gritty and sharply drained; use a cactus and succulent mix in pots and add coarse sand or scoria to garden beds
Establishment Care: Water lightly every week or two for the first few months only, then reduce to occasional deep soakings in dry spells, because overwatering kills far more jades than drought. Keep it out of frost pockets, and note that the sap can irritate skin and the foliage is best kept away from pets inclined to chew plants.
