Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Smooth Agave - Agave desmettiana
The Smooth Agave is the one to use where a large agave is wanted but sharp spines are a problem. Agave desmettiana has soft, arching, almost spineless leaves in a graceful urn-shaped rosette, quite unlike the rigid armed rosettes of the century plants, so it can sit beside a path or a pool without being a hazard. It also grows quickly by agave standards, filling a bed in a few years rather than a decade.
Why Smooth Agave
Soft Leaves: Only fine marginal teeth and a soft tip, making it far safer near paths, pools and seating.
Urn Shape: Leaves curve upward and outward into a vase form rather than lying flat, giving height in a bed.
Fast Establishment: One of the quicker agaves, so plantings look complete sooner.
Offsets Freely: Produces pups around the base, which replace the parent rosette after it flowers.
Coastal Hardy: Tolerates salt wind and sandy soil in front-line coastal gardens.
Ideal Applications
Poolside Planting: The lack of hard spines makes it one of the few large agaves suitable near water and bare feet.
Massed Beds: Repeated through gravel it gives a strong sculptural pattern on no irrigation.
Feature Pot: A single rosette in a tall pot is a standard modern courtyard treatment.
Coastal Frontage: Handles wind, salt and sand where most feature plants burn.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant. Massed at 1 to 1.2m between rosettes.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m as repeated accents.
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, while soil is warm.
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining sandy or gravelly soil. It is more frost tender than most agaves, so avoid cold frost hollows in inland districts.
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first warm season, then rely on rainfall. Mulch with gravel rather than bark, and be aware that the rosette flowers once at around eight to ten years, sends up a tall stalk, then dies back while the surrounding pups carry the planting on.
