Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
King Fern - Angiopteris evecta
The king fern carries the largest fronds of any fern on earth, arching several metres out from a squat woody base that looks more like a boulder than a trunk. Angiopteris evecta grows in the deep shade of Queensland rainforest gullies, and in a garden it does the same job: it fills a shaded, sheltered, permanently moist corner with a single prehistoric presence that nothing else can imitate. It is a specialist plant with specific needs, and it repays getting those conditions right.
Why King Fern
Frond Scale: Individual fronds can extend several metres, giving a canopy effect from a ground level plant.
Sculptural Base: The swollen, fleshy stipe bases build into a knotted woody crown that becomes a feature over time.
Australian Rainforest Species: Genuinely native to Queensland wet tropics, so it belongs in an Australian rainforest planting.
Deep Shade Performer: Thrives in low light positions where almost nothing of this size will grow.
Long Lived: A slow, permanent plant that improves for decades rather than needing replacement.
Ideal Applications
Rainforest Gully Planting: Placed at the base of a shaded slope or beside a water feature where humidity collects.
Under Established Canopy: Grows beneath tall trees as a true understorey plant, alongside gingers and bangalow palms.
Shaded Courtyard Focal Point: One plant fills an enclosed, protected space completely.
Atrium and Conservatory: Suits large warm interior spaces with high humidity and filtered light.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging plant. In a grouped understorey planting allow 4 to 6m.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 8m, allowing full frond span without contact
Best Planting Season: Spring through summer, into warm moist soil
Soil & Drainage: Deep, rich, permanently moist soil heavy with leaf litter and compost, yet still draining. It will not accept drying out, and it will not accept stagnant water.
Establishment Care: Keep soil moist at all times and raise humidity around the plant with overhead watering in dry weather. Mulch thickly with leaf litter, and shelter completely from wind and frost, both of which will scorch and tear the fronds beyond recovery.
