Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Holly Fuchsia - Graptophyllum ilicifolium
Graptophyllum ilicifolium is a central Queensland endemic with a very small natural range, and it looks unlike anything else in the native shrub palette: stiff, glossy, holly toothed leaves with waxy red tubular flowers held against them. It flowers over a long warm season and pulls honeyeaters in constantly. As a garden plant it fills the difficult brief of a hardy, shade tolerant shrub with strong flower colour and evergreen structure.
Why Holly Fuchsia
Foliage Character: Spiny margined, deep green and glossy, the leaves give a formal, almost clipped look without any pruning.
Long Flowering: Red tubular flowers appear over an extended period through the warmer months rather than in one short burst.
Nectar Value: The flower shape is built for honeyeaters, and eastern spinebills and scarlet honeyeaters work it steadily.
Shade Performance: It grows naturally in dry vine thicket, so it flowers acceptably in dappled light where many shrubs will not.
Conservation Interest: A rare and restricted species, so growing it well has value beyond the garden.
Ideal Applications
Understorey shrub layer: Sits beneath established trees in subtropical and tropical gardens where light is filtered.
Informal low screen: A row gives a dense, prickly leaved barrier along a fence line or path edge.
Bird garden feature: Positioned near a window or terrace to bring honeyeaters into view.
Native collector planting: A talking point in rare and endemic species collections.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring through summer in warm zones; avoid cold or frosty periods entirely
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam enriched with compost; it resents heavy waterlogged soils
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly for the first three months and keep the soil evenly moist but never sodden through the first summer. Mulch to 50mm, feed lightly with a slow release native fertiliser in spring, and tip prune after flowering to keep the shrub bushy.
