Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sensation Peace Lily - Spathiphyllum ‘Sensation’
‘Sensation’ is the giant of the peace lilies, building a clump well over a metre tall and wide with broad, deeply ribbed, dark green leaves. Spathiphyllum ‘Sensation’ is grown as much for that foliage as for the large white spathes it throws up in spring and again in autumn, and the sheer size of the leaf lets it hold a space that smaller shade plants cannot. In frost free Australian gardens it is a genuine landscape plant, filling deeply shaded beds where light levels defeat almost everything else.
Why Sensation Peace Lily
Leaf Size: Broad ribbed leaves reach well over half a metre, giving a bold tropical texture in full shade.
Deep Shade Tolerance: It performs in positions with no direct sun at all, including narrow side gardens and atriums.
Twice Yearly Flowering: Large white spathes appear mainly in spring and again in autumn, ageing to soft green.
Clumping Habit: The clump thickens steadily from the base without running or invading nearby planting.
Indoor Crossover: The same plant performs in low light interiors, which suits covered courtyards and lobbies.
Ideal Applications
Shaded Garden Beds: Massed in a dark bed it delivers scale and gloss where flowering plants will not grow.
Tropical Understorey: Planted beneath palms and heliconias it completes the lowest layer of a warm climate garden.
Atriums and Light Wells: Enclosed shaded spaces suit its humidity preference exactly.
Large Interior Pots: A single mature clump in a broad container fills a corner of a room or foyer.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m for a continuous planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.2 to 1.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring through summer, into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Rich, humus laden, moisture retentive soil that still drains freely; add generous compost before planting
Establishment Care: Keep the soil evenly moist through the first year, as the large leaves lose water quickly and wilt visibly if allowed to dry. Mulch with compost or fine bark, protect from frost and direct sun, and note that the sap contains calcium oxalate, so the plant should not be chewed by children or pets.
