Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Breynia sp. Ironstone Range
This is a north Queensland rainforest shrub still carried under a collection name rather than a published species epithet, which is common for plants in this group. Like other Australian Breynia, it grows as a softly layered, fine leaved understorey shrub, holding its small leaves in flat sprays along arching stems. It is grown for foliage texture in warm climate gardens rather than for any flower display, and it fills the middle layer beneath palms and rainforest trees where a coarser shrub would look heavy.
Why This Breynia
Fine layered foliage: Small leaves held in flat horizontal sprays give a light, fern like texture.
Understorey performance: It grows naturally in filtered rainforest light, so it fills shaded positions that defeat sun loving shrubs.
Responds to clipping: Regular trimming thickens it into a soft informal hedge rather than a hard formal one.
Humidity loving: It is at home in the humid tropics and subtropics where many temperate shrubs struggle.
Frost tender: It needs a frost free position, which limits it to coastal Queensland, the Northern Territory Top End and warm northern New South Wales.
Ideal Applications
Rainforest understorey: Massed beneath established canopy it creates the middle layer a tropical planting usually lacks.
Informal screen: In warm coastal gardens it forms a soft green divider between spaces.
Shaded courtyard: It holds foliage quality in the low light of a walled or roofed courtyard.
Native mixed planting: It combines with other tropical natives in a habitat style bed.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Any time in the tropics; spring to early autumn further south
Soil & Drainage: Moist, organic rich soil that still drains freely; it dislikes both drought and stagnant water
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist for the first two wet and dry cycles, watering twice weekly through any dry period. Mulch heavily with leaf litter or bark to hold humidity at the base, and shelter young plants from hot dry wind, which browns the fine foliage faster than sun does.
