Beatrice Emily Camellia - Camellia sasanqua ‘Beatrice Emily’
Sasanqua camellias earn their keep by flowering through autumn when most of the garden has shut down, and this is one of the steadier performers in that group. Camellia sasanqua ‘Beatrice Emily’ carries informal double blooms in white washed with soft lavender over small, hard, glossy leaves on a dense upright frame. Unlike the japonica camellias it holds that foliage in open sun, which is why it gets used as a clipped hedge rather than a shade border shrub.
Why Beatrice Emily Camellia
Autumn Bloom: Flowering runs from April into June across most temperate districts, filling the gap between the last of the salvias and the first of the japonicas.
Sun Tolerance: The small, thick leaf resists scorch in open positions where broader leaved camellias burn.
Dense Branching: Growth is closely spaced from the base, so a hedge fills in without a bare legged stage.
Clipping Response: It shears cleanly and reshoots from older wood, which allows formal hedging and espalier work.
Clean Finish: Spent petals shatter and drop rather than browning on the bush, so the plant stays presentable without deadheading.
Ideal Applications
Clipped boundary hedge: Planted in a single line it makes a flowering evergreen wall of 2 to 2.5m with two trims a year.
Espalier: Laterals tie down readily onto wires against brick or a fence, giving flower on a surface only 300mm deep.
Narrow side passage: The upright habit suits the tight run between a house and a boundary fence where width is limited.
Large containers: It holds well in a 600mm pot for years provided the mix stays acidic and never dries out completely.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and early spring, avoiding midsummer in hot inland districts
Soil & Drainage: Slightly acidic at pH 5.5 to 6.5, humus rich and free draining; leaves yellow badly on limey ground or where water sits
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first summer, tapering to weekly once the new growth hardens off. Keep 75mm of coarse organic mulch over the root zone but clear of the stems, since the feeding roots sit close to the surface and dry out quickly.
