Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Weeping Hornbeam - Carpinus betulus ‘Pendula’
The weeping hornbeam is a grafted form that abandons the upright habit of the species entirely, sending its branches out and then down in a broad cascading dome of ribbed, sharply toothed leaves. Because Carpinus betulus is one of the toughest deciduous trees in cultivation, this weeping selection survives clay, wind and cold that would defeat a weeping cherry or birch. It stays low and spreads wide, so it is placed for its shape rather than for shade or screening.
Why Weeping Hornbeam
Cascading Form: Branches arch out and fall vertically, creating a living dome that children invariably want to get inside.
Textured Foliage: The deeply ribbed, pleated leaves catch light differently to any other weeping tree.
Site Toughness: Hornbeam handles heavy clay, exposed wind and hard frost without complaint.
Autumn Turn: Foliage moves to clear yellow and warm gold before dropping.
Winter Silhouette: Once bare, the arching framework is a strong sculptural feature in a dormant garden.
Ideal Applications
Lawn Specimen: Set on open turf where the skirt can fall to ground level uninterrupted.
Formal Garden Centrepiece: Anchors the middle of a parterre, rose garden or gravel courtyard.
Cool Climate Feature: A dependable choice for Tasmania, the tablelands, central Victoria and the Adelaide Hills.
Beside Water: The weeping outline works over a pond edge or beside a formal pool.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening tree. In a grouped planting allow 4 to 5m.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m so the full skirt can develop
Best Planting Season: Winter and early spring while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable across clay, loam and chalky soils. Prefers moist ground but needs it to drain rather than sit waterlogged.
Establishment Care: Water deeply through the first two summers, as young hornbeams scorch at the leaf margins under heat stress. Mulch out to the drip line, stake only until the graft union is secure, and remove any suckers or upright shoots from the rootstock so the weeping head stays dominant.
