Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar - Cedrus atlantica ‘Glauca Pendula’
No two of these are the same plant twice. ‘Glauca Pendula’ is a weeping, grafted form of Cedrus atlantica with no natural leader, so its final height is set entirely by how far the leading shoot is staked upward before it is allowed to fall. From that point it pours down in curtains of stiff, steel blue needles. Landscape designers use it as a sculptural object rather than as a tree: draped over a retaining wall, trained along a pergola beam, or left to spill across gravel as a single dominant form.
Why Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar
Trained Height: The plant has no natural upright habit, so the height and shape are determined by staking and can be set to suit the site.
Needle Colour: Intense silver blue foliage that holds its colour year round, at its strongest in full sun.
Slow Development: It grows slowly enough that a considered form stays in proportion for many years.
Climate Hardiness: Once established it takes hard frost, dry summers and poor stony soil.
Placement Demands: It needs a horizontal run to fall across, so a wall top, an embankment or an open gravel bed is essential.
Ideal Applications
Retaining Wall Cascade: Planted above a wall so the foliage falls down the face, which is its most effective use.
Entry Sculpture: A single trained plant beside a front entry works as a permanent piece of garden art.
Gravel Courtyard: Spilling across crushed rock with boulders, it holds a Japanese influenced composition together.
Trained Along a Structure: Tied out along a pergola beam or fence rail, it forms a blue curtain over several years.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant. Trained in a run along a wall, 3 to 4m apart.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m of clear width, since it spreads wider than it is tall.
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring.
Soil & Drainage: Deep and free draining. It dislikes humid, poorly drained soil and will decline in ground that stays wet through winter.
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first two summers and then only in severe drought. Keep a stake on the leading shoot for as long as you want additional height, cut away any growth arising below the graft union, and mulch generously without piling material against the stem.
