Lavender Twist Weeping Redbud - Cercis canadensis ‘Covey’
Take the eastern North American redbud, remove its upright trunk habit and let every branch arch back toward the ground, and you have this plant. Cercis canadensis ‘Covey’ forms a low, contorted umbrella of twisting branches that is arguably at its best in winter when bare, then covers those same bare stems in rosy lavender pea flowers before a single leaf appears. Heart-shaped leaves follow and turn clear butter yellow in autumn, which makes it one of the few small trees that genuinely earns its place in all four seasons.
Why Lavender Twist
Winter Structure: The zigzagging, weeping branch framework is a sculptural feature in its own right once leaves drop.
Flowers on Bare Wood: Rosy lavender pink flowers open directly along the branches and trunk in late winter to early spring, before leaf out.
Heart-Shaped Foliage: Rounded, deeply heart-shaped leaves cast dappled shade and turn yellow in autumn.
Small Footprint: It stays genuinely small, so it works in a courtyard where a standard ornamental tree would overwhelm.
Cool Climate Preference: It needs real winter chill and dislikes humid tropical summers, so it belongs in the southern states, the tablelands and hill districts.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard Centrepiece: Its scale and shape suit a small paved space viewed from indoors year round.
Beside Water: The weeping form reflects well over a pond or still water feature.
Front Garden Focal Point: Positioned in lawn or gravel, it reads as a piece of garden sculpture.
Mixed Cool Climate Border: Underplanted with hellebores or spring bulbs that flower with it.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant; allow 3m between plants if grouped
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring while dormant, or autumn in mild districts
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moisture retentive but free draining loam; it resents both waterlogging and prolonged drought, and dislikes root disturbance
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice weekly through the first two summers, easing off as autumn arrives. Mulch a wide circle to keep the shallow roots cool, avoid cultivating beneath the canopy, and give it shelter from hot, dry afternoon wind.
