Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Rio Red Grapefruit - Citrus paradisi ‘Rio Red’
‘Rio Red’ is the deep fleshed red grapefruit developed in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, and it holds its colour far better than the older pink varieties which fade as the season goes on. The fruit is large, close to seedless and noticeably sweeter and less bitter than a Marsh, with flesh that runs a genuine ruby red rather than a washed out pink. As a tree, Citrus paradisi is a handsome glossy evergreen with a rounded canopy that carries fruit through the whole cool season.
Why Rio Red Grapefruit
Deep Red Flesh: Colour intensity is the point of this variety, and it holds through the season rather than paling.
Low Bitterness: Sweeter and rounder in flavour than the traditional white and pink grapefruits.
Few Seeds: Generally seedless to nearly seedless, which matters for juicing and fresh eating.
Long Hang Time: Fruit holds on the tree for months and continues to sweeten, effectively storing itself outdoors.
Ornamental Canopy: Large glossy leaves, fragrant spring blossom and heavy yellow fruit make it a decorative tree in its own right.
Ideal Applications
Productive Home Orchard: A single mature tree produces well beyond one household's needs in a warm district.
Feature Fruit Tree in Lawn: The rounded evergreen canopy holds shape year round without pruning.
Warm Courtyard: Reflected wall heat improves fruit sugar in cooler coastal districts.
Edible Screen Row: Planted in a line it forms a dense productive barrier with an evergreen habit.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early autumn, avoiding cold wet winter soil
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Citrus roots will not tolerate waterlogging, so mound or raise the planting position in clay
Establishment Care: Water deeply and consistently through the first two summers, as irregular moisture during flowering and fruit set causes heavy fruit drop. Keep grass and mulch away from the trunk, feed with a complete citrus fertiliser in late winter and again in late summer, remove any shoots below the graft union, and give young trees wind shelter and frost protection since grapefruit needs accumulated heat to develop full flavour.
