Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Minneola Tangelo - Citrus x tangelo ‘Minneola’
A cross between a grapefruit and a mandarin, and the fruit shows both parents: deep orange red skin, a pronounced neck at the stem end that makes it instantly recognisable, and juicy flesh with a tart edge behind the sweetness. Citrus x tangelo ‘Minneola’ ripens late, filling the gap between the mandarin season and the summer citrus, and the tree is vigorous and open with slightly drooping branches.
Why Minneola Tangelo
Late harvest: Fruit ripens through late winter and into spring, extending the citrus season considerably.
Distinctive fruit: The necked shape and deep orange red colour set it apart on the tree and in the bowl.
Rich juice: Flesh is very juicy with a tangy grapefruit note behind mandarin sweetness.
Cross pollination lifts yield: It sets some fruit alone, but crops far more heavily with another citrus flowering nearby.
Vigorous open habit: It grows strongly and benefits from occasional thinning to keep light in the canopy.
Ideal Applications
Home orchard: A standard inclusion in a mixed citrus planting for its late season timing.
Lawn specimen: Glossy evergreen foliage, spring perfume and winter fruit colour in a single tree.
Large container: On dwarfing rootstock it crops well in a big pot on a sunny terrace.
Edible screen row: Planted at close spacing it forms a productive evergreen boundary.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5m
Best Planting Season: Spring once the soil warms, or autumn in frost free areas
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam or sandy loam at pH 6 to 7; mound the planting position on heavy clay
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers and keep the root zone weed free, as citrus compete poorly with grass. Mulch generously but leave a clear circle around the trunk, and shelter young trees from frost until they have made two or three seasons of growth.
