Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Red Ti Plant - Cordyline fruticosa ‘Rubra’
Foliage colour is the whole point here. Cordyline fruticosa ‘Rubra’ throws upright canes topped with broad, glossy leaves in deep burgundy to wine red, and the colour intensifies as light levels rise. In warm coastal and tropical Australian gardens it does the work a flowering shrub cannot, holding strong colour twelve months of the year in shaded courtyards, under palms and along pool surrounds where green on green becomes monotonous.
Why the Red Ti Plant
Permanent colour: The burgundy leaves are the display, so there is no off-season the way there is with a flowering shrub.
Vertical, narrow habit: Slim canes take up almost no ground space, which makes it useful in garden beds only 500mm deep.
Shade performance: Keeps good form in filtered light where most coloured foliage plants go leggy and green.
Easily rejuvenated: Canes can be cut back hard and will reshoot from the stump, so an overgrown clump is a five minute fix.
Clumping habit: New canes arise from the base over time, thickening the plant without it running or self-seeding through the garden.
Ideal Applications
Tropical understorey: Planted in drifts beneath palms and heliconias to lift the mid-level with colour.
Pool and courtyard planters: Handles container culture well and gives a strong vertical against tiled or rendered walls.
Entry accent: A matched pair either side of a door reads as a formal statement in warm climates.
Colour band along paths: A continuous line of canes gives a defined edge that never needs clipping.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring through summer, into warm soil; avoid planting into cold wet ground
Soil & Drainage: Moist but free draining soil high in organic matter; will rot in cold, heavy, waterlogged clay
Establishment Care: Keep evenly moist for the first three months and never let the root zone dry out completely in the first summer. Mulch with leaf litter or fine composted material and feed with a balanced slow release fertiliser in spring to keep new leaves large and well coloured.
