Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Philodendron ‘Rojo Congo’
‘Rojo Congo’ is grown for its stems as much as its leaves. Thick burgundy red petioles hold large glossy blades that emerge deep wine red and darken to near black-green as they mature, so a healthy plant always shows both colours at once. It is a self heading Philodendron, meaning it forms a broad rosette on a short trunk rather than climbing, which makes it usable as a freestanding mass planting or a container specimen.
Why Rojo Congo
Red Petioles: The thick wine coloured leaf stalks are a permanent feature, not a passing new growth colour.
Two Tone Canopy: New leaves unfurl burgundy against mature dark green, giving continuous colour change without flowers.
Self Heading Habit: No climbing support needed, and the plant builds outward into a symmetrical rosette.
Low Light Reliability: It holds full leaf size and colour in bright indirect light where most coloured foliage plants pale off.
Dual Use: Equally at home planted out in a subtropical courtyard or grown long term in a large interior pot.
Toxicity warning: The sap contains calcium oxalate crystals that burn the mouth and throat if chewed, so keep it away from small children and pets.
Ideal Applications
Shaded Courtyard Massing: Groups of three or five under canopy in Brisbane, northern New South Wales and Darwin gardens.
Interior Containers: Large pots in bright indirect light in living rooms, lobbies and covered atriums.
Understorey Colour: The burgundy tones give depth beneath palms, gingers and tree ferns where flowers do not perform.
Poolside Beds: Compact, non invasive roots and minimal leaf litter suit planting beds against paved surrounds.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m for a continuous understorey layer
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.2 to 1.5m so each rosette develops evenly
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, once nights are consistently mild
Soil & Drainage: Rich, open, free draining soil or a premium indoor mix high in organic matter; it rots in dense wet ground
Establishment Care: Keep the mix evenly moist but never soggy, allowing the top few centimetres to dry between waterings, and feed with a slow release fertiliser each spring. Wipe or hose the leaves occasionally to keep the gloss, and be aware the sap contains calcium oxalate, so wear gloves when removing old leaves and keep the plant away from pets that chew foliage.
