Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
White Correa - Correa alba
Plant this one on the front dune and it will not blink. Correa alba grows naturally on exposed coastal headlands and sand across southern Australia, and it carries salt wind, sandy soil and drought better than almost any other flowering native shrub. The leaves are small, rounded and grey green with a white felted underside, and unlike the tubular bells of most correas, the flowers are open four petalled white stars, produced through autumn and winter when nectar is scarce.
Why White Correa
Salt Tolerance: Withstands direct salt laden wind on front line coastal positions with no leaf burn.
Winter Flowering: White star flowers appear from autumn through winter, feeding honeyeaters in the lean months.
Grey Green Foliage: Soft rounded leaves with a felty white reverse give a distinctive silvery texture year round.
Dense Habit: Naturally bushy to the ground, so it forms a solid low mass without gappy legs.
Soil Indifference: Grows on pure sand, limestone and poor gravel where richer soils are not available.
Ideal Applications
Coastal Gardens: The standard shrub for exposed beachside blocks and dune stabilisation.
Low Informal Hedge: Trimmed to a soft grey green border at 0.8 to 1.2m along a path or drive.
Bird Habitat Planting: Grouped with grevillea and banksia to hold honeyeaters through winter.
Low Water Landscapes: Massed on waterwise sites where irrigation is unavailable after establishment.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.8m for a continuous low hedge
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.5m as individual shrubs
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy or gravelly soils are ideal, including alkaline coastal sands. On clay, plant into a raised mound and avoid phosphorus rich fertilisers
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first six months to move roots out of the potting mix, then only during prolonged dry weather, since established plants resent regular irrigation. Use a light coarse mulch kept off the stems and tip prune lightly after the winter flowering finishes each year to keep the bush compact and well furnished to the ground.
