Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Silver Dollar Jade - Crassula arborescens
The silver dollar jade is grown for its leaf colour more than its flowers. Crassula arborescens carries almost perfectly round, thick, blue-grey leaves edged and speckled in maroon, held on a stout branching trunk that thickens into a miniature tree over many years. Against green foliage or dark stone it is one of the few succulents that genuinely reads as silver from a distance.
Why Silver Dollar Jade
Leaf Colour: Powdery blue-grey discs with red margins and fine red dotting, holding colour year round.
Trunk Development: With age the base thickens and the branching becomes gnarled, giving a bonsai-like structure at garden scale.
Extreme Drought Tolerance: Established plants survive long dry periods on stored leaf moisture with no supplementary water.
Coastal Resilience: It handles salt wind and sandy soils, making it dependable in exposed beachside gardens.
Autumn Flowers: Mature plants carry clusters of small white to pale pink stars in autumn and winter, though flowering is shy in cultivation.
Ideal Applications
Feature Container: A single specimen in a wide shallow pot on a sunny terrace or entry step.
Dry Rockeries: Set among stone and gravel with aloes, agaves and sedums in a no irrigation bed.
Coastal Front Gardens: Reliable in sandy, salt affected soil where conventional shrubs burn.
Colour Contrast Planting: Used as the silver element against dark green or burgundy foliage in a low water border.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.2m for a low informal succulent border
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m so the branching structure is visible
Best Planting Season: Spring through early autumn, into warm dry soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is essential; sandy, gravelly or a dedicated succulent mix, and mound the bed if the soil is clay
Establishment Care: Water lightly every week or two for the first three months and let the soil dry completely between waterings, since overwatering is the usual cause of failure. Use gravel or coarse mineral mulch rather than organic mulch against the stem, and keep it out of frost hollows because more than a light frost damages the leaves.
