Gymea Lily - Doryanthes excelsa
Doryanthes excelsa is the great architectural plant of the Sydney region: a rosette of stiff, sword-shaped leaves up to two metres long, from which mature plants throw a single enormous flower stem topped with a globular head of deep red flowers. Nothing else in the Australian native palette gives that combination of ground-level mass and vertical drama, and the plant is long-lived and almost indestructible once settled. It is slow to reach flowering age, so an established specimen is worth waiting for or buying at size.
Why Gymea Lily
Flower Stem: A single thick spike carries a dense head of red flowers well above head height in spring and early summer.
Leaf Architecture: Broad, strap-like leaves radiating from a central crown make a bold sculptural clump year round.
Longevity: Plants persist for decades and slowly build into multi-crowned clumps.
Fire and Drought Resilience: A large underground rootstock lets it survive drought and resprout after fire.
Bird Attraction: The nectar-rich flower head draws honeyeaters and lorikeets in numbers.
Ideal Applications
Architectural feature: A single plant as the sculptural focus of a courtyard, entry or gravel garden.
Massed on a slope: Groups planted through a sandstone embankment for structure and erosion control.
Native and bushland gardens: A signature Sydney sandstone plant alongside banksias and grass trees.
Large containers: Big pots on a terrace, where its slow growth and tolerance of neglect are an advantage.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m for a massed group
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn
Soil & Drainage: Sandy or gravelly free draining soil, tolerates poor and rocky ground, will rot in heavy wet clay
Establishment Care: Water regularly through the first two summers to get the fleshy root system away, then reduce to occasional deep soaks. Mulch lightly with a coarse gravel or bark, keep the crown clear of mulch, and remove spent flower stems and dead leaves at the base to keep the rosette clean.
